Agostino Bonalumi (Vimercate, Milano, 1935)

Abbandonati gli studi di disegno tecnico e meccanico, si dedica da autodidatta alla pittura, tenendo nel 1956 la sua prima personale presso la Galleria Totti di Milano. Frequenta lo studio di Enrico Baj e incontra Piero Manzoni ed Enrico Castellani, con i quali nel 1958 espone a Roma, Losanna e infine a Milano. L’anno seguente fonda con Castellani la rivista “Azimuth” e frequenta lo studio di Lucio Fontana, iniziando una ricerca incentrata sullo spazio che lo porta a realizzare le prime estroflessioni: opere che l’artista definisce Pitture-Oggetto, ottenute grazie a telai e strutture che, poste sul retro della tela, ne comportano la tensione e la deformazione. Negli anni sessanta la sua ricerca evolve verso la creazione di opere-ambiente, nelle quali lo spettatore partecipa attivamente allo spazio, come Blu abitabile (1967), Grande ambiente bianco e nero (1968), e Ambiente pittura dal giallo al bianco e dal bianco al giallo (1979). Partecipa alla Biennale di Venezia nel 1966, nel 1970 con una sala personale e nel 1986. Nel 1980 nelle sale del Palazzo Te a Mantova viene allestita un’importante retrospettiva della sua opera e l’anno dopo partecipa con Piero Dorazio, Mimmo Rotella e Giuseppe Santomaso alla mostra “Italian Art: Four Contemporary Directions” al Museum of Art di Fort Lauderdale, Florida (USA). Bonalumi si occupa anche di scenografia e realizza nel 1970, per il Teatro Romano di Verona, le scene e i costumi per il balletto Partita di Susanna Egri, e nel 1972, per il Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, le scene e i costumi per il balletto Rot. Nel 2002 gli viene conferito il Premio Presidente della Repubblica e in quest'occasione l'Accademia Nazionale di S. Luca gli dedica una retrospettiva nella sede di Palazzo Carpegna a Roma. Nel 2003 viene allestita una mostra alla Civica Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Gallarate e partecipa alla mostra "Futuro Italiano", allestita nelle sale del Parlamento Europeo a Bruxelles. A cavallo tra il 2003 e il 2004 l'Institut Mathildenhöe di Darmstadt allestisce una sua personale. Bonalumi muore a Desio il 18 settembre 2013.

Agostino Bonalumi was born in Vimercate, Milan, on July 10, 1935. Having abandoned his technical and mechanical drawing studies, he dedicated himself to painting as a self-taught person, holding his first solo show in 1956 at the Galleria Totti in Milan. He attended Enrico Baj's studio and met Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani, with whom he exhibited in Rome, Lausanne and finally in Milan in 1958. The following year he founded the magazine "Azimuth" with Castellani and attended the studio of Lucio Fontana, starting a research focused on space that led him to create his first extroversions: works that the artist defines Paintings-Objects, obtained thanks to frames and structures which, placed on the back of the canvas, cause its tension and deformation. In the sixties his research evolved towards the creation of environment-works, in which the viewer actively participated in the space, such as Blu Habitable (1967), Grande Ambiente black and white (1968), and Ambiente painting from yellow to white and from white. to yellow (1979). He took part in the Venice Biennale in 1966, in 1970 with a personal room and in 1986. In 1980 an important retrospective of his work was set up in the rooms of Palazzo Te in Mantua and the following year he participated with Piero Dorazio, Mimmo Rotella and Giuseppe Santomaso at the “Italian Art: Four Contemporary Directions” exhibition at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (USA). Rot. In 2002 he was awarded the President of the Republic Prize and on this occasion the National Academy of S. Luca dedicates a retrospective to him at the Palazzo Carpegna in Rome. In 2003 an exhibition was set up at the Civic Gallery of Modern Art in Gallarate and participated in the "Futuro Italiano" exhibition, set up in the rooms of the European Parliament in Brussels. Between 2003 and 2004, the Institut Mathildenhöe in Darmstadt sets up a solo exhibition of him. Bonalumi died in Desio on 18 September 2013.
